Industry Profile: Rich Levy

— By Bob Grossweiner and Jane Cohen

Rich Levy is vice president of booking for national sales and marketing at Clear Channel Entertainment Properties, where he has been intimately involved in creating/booking talent for programs such as The Jagermeister Music Tour, T Mobile All Access, the launch of Adidas Adrenaline, Coors Light Mountain Jam, Tommy Jeans Stages at several CCE amphitheaters, the Nintendo Fusion Tour, Miller Pure Night Out, and numerous others.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Rich began working in the concert promotion business at Brusco Barr Presents in 1991 in Atlanta. In 1993, Rich formed Alienation Inc., which booked national tours for signed and unsigned acts as well as talent buying for such notable rooms in Atlanta as The Point and The Dark Horse. Alienation was instrumental in the signing success of James Hall (Geffen), Emmet Swimming (Epic), Skirt (Shanachie) and The Drag (Island).

In April 1996, Rich joined Concert Southern Promotions in Atlanta where he became vice president and continued to book the Point and also booked the Cotton Club and the Roxy Theater. In 1997, Rich was nominated for Pollstar's Nightclub Talent Buyer of the Year. "Eric Herz won damnit!" he says.

In 1997 Rich founded the Atlantis Music Conference along with partners Mark Willis and Lee Beitchman. The conference was (and continues to be) a labor of love: a four day music showcase for unsigned artists featuring 20+ educational panels during the day, where industry professionals speak on a variety of relevant subjects and showcases by 200 bands at night.

In February 1998, Rich became a talent buyer for Cellar Door of the Carolinas working for his mentor, Wilson Howard. He lived in Atlanta and booked and covered shows across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee. During this time he was instrumental in assisting Ted Mankin and Lance Sterling with the opening of the Tabernacle in Atlanta.

In April 1999, SFX bought Cellar Door Concerts and found themselves in a situation where they owned two competing companies in the same market. Rich was offered a promotion and a new title, regional vice president of southeastern clubs and theaters. He relocated to Fort Lauderdale to work with Randy McElrath in Florida. It was during this time that he made some of his first forays into sponsored tours, helping secure talent like 3 Doors Down and Our Lady Peace for tours for Cutty Sark. The next step in this evolution was working with Rick Zeiler on putting together the first Jagermeister Music Tour featuring Drowning Pool in 38 us markets. From there he went on to work on the Ford Focus tour while still handling his day-to-day booking duties for shows in Florida.

In 2000, Rich's sole holdover from Alienation, Peter Searcy, was signed to Jim Guerinot’s Time Bomb Label, distributed by BMG. Searcy’s debut album was released on Time Bomb/Arista that year. By late 2001, Clear Channel had acquired SFX, and Rich had put in a personal request to move back to Atlanta. Wilson Howard, Randy McElrath and Peter Conlon accommodated his request. He moved back to Atlanta and continued booking the state of Florida with McElrath from the Atlanta office. This continued through 2002.

Between the constant travel and his ever-growing involvement in the sponsorship division -- three Jagermeister Tours, a Grey Goose Music Tour, the award-winning Miller Rellim Tour, etc., something had to give. Rich chose to go into developing custom sponsor tours, events and programs full time.

At the beginning of 2003, Bruce Eskowitz and Maureen Ford created a position for him as VP of Booking for National Sales and Marketing at Clear Channel Entertainment Properties. Over the course of the year, Rich was intimately involved in creating/booking talent for programs such as T Mobile All Access (2003 featuring Barenaked Ladies, Train, Fuel, Jason Mraz, 311, Ashanti and Live), the launch of Adidas Adrenaline at Irving Plaza in New York (also 2003 featuring the Pussycat Dolls starring Carmen Elektra), Coors Light Mountain Jam at Red Rocks Amphitheater (2003 featuring 50 Cent, Korn, POD The Doors of the 21st Century, Evanescence, Government Mule, etc.), Tommy Jeans Stages at several CCE amphitheaters, the Nintendo Fusion Tour (2003 featuring Evanescence, Cold, Revis, Finger 11 in 25 US markets), Miller Pure Night Out (2003 in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, featuring performers such as Ludacris, Snoop, Cypress Hill, Chingy, etc.), and others.

These days Rich still resides in Atlanta where he balances his work responsibilities at Clear Channel with his management of Peter Searcy, his involvement in the Atlantis Music Conference and an active social life. His faithful dog Raj, a 90-pound black lab/chow mix, accompanies him to work most days. On most Mondays, you can find him at the 10 High Nightclub belting out an occasional metal tune at Metal-some Mondays: Live Band Metal Karaoke.

Do you miss promoting concerts?
There are certain things that I miss about promoting concerts: taking the gamble, working with new talent early on, etc., but other than the gamble, I get most of the other benefits from doing sponsored tours and events. I can always play blackjack or craps if I really feel the need to take a risk. The business has changed so much in the last few years. It has gotten much more difficult and as a result, the pressure on promoters, marketers, box office staff, and venue staff has increased ten fold. I hear the stress in the voices of these people, and I'm very happy to be doing what I'm doing.

What makes for a good sponsorship for music concerts/tours?
The company having clearly defined, realistic goals, coupled with a strong brand identity that lends itself to the musical landscape. It takes a lot more thought and vision than buying a billboard or a radio commercial to choose and activate a sponsorship for a brand, but if it's done right, the impression it makes is far more lasting and impactful.

Why did you start the Atlantis Music Conference?
Mark Willis and I met up at a wrap party for music midtown in 1997 and figured out that we both shared a passion for developing artists. We also felt that the southeast and Atlanta in particular were really off the rock industry radar. Over the course of a few weeks, we had meetings, brought in Lee Beitchman to round out the partnership, and decided to start the conference.

A lot of factors converged in those days that made it an exciting time. Leslie Fram was adding unsigned artists like Shawn Mullins and Marvelous 3 to 99X and artists like John Mayer were getting signed, and in the midst of it, we started our campaign to bring the industry to Atlanta. I like to think that we have succeeded. We haven’t made any money on the conference in seven years. It's self sustaining at this point, but we haven’t even recouped our initial investment. It's a labor of love and a resource for the people who choose to take advantage of it. I liken it to community service or being on the board of a charity; it's a way to give back to the music community.

What has Atlantis accomplished over the past seven years?
We have employed as many as seven people in our offices and many more during the event. We have had a tremendous financial impact on the Atlanta market bringing a lot of business here for the venues, hotels, restaurants, etc. that our patrons frequent. We have increased the industry profile of Atlanta in the rock community, and we have started to have impact in the urban music community as well. Over 40 acts that have played the conference have gone on to get signed. Countless more have made contacts that resulted in finding lawyers, booking agents or managers. Most importantly though, we have educated a lot of people about the music industry and given a lot of people opportunities. Mark has always said that our conference "is what you make of it" and that still rings true.

Some signed bands since 1998 include Seely (Koch), Sol (Jive), The Johnny Knox Trio (Galaxie), Crease (Roadrunner), Tendor Idols (E-Magine Music), Impotent Sea Snakes (Radioactive),Fozzy (Megaforce/Pal), Vigilantes of Love (Compass), Josh Joplin (Artemis), Dog Fashion Disco (Spitfire ), Hobex (Slash/London), Marvelous 3 (Elektra), Billionaire (London), Peter Searcy (Time Bomb/BMG), Noel Hartough (Columbia), Lackey (Capitol), Doubledrive (MCA), Gary Steer (Universal), Injected (Island/Def Jam), Dezeray's Hammer (Neutron/Edel), Ultraphonic (Garageband.com), Co-Ed (Universal), Left Front Tire (Universal), Sick Speed (DK), The X-Impossibles (Cargo/Headhunter/MCA), John Mayer (Columbia), Mesh (The Firm/The Label), K-Floor (Treasure), Justin Case (Maverick), 41 Down (Geffen/Interscope), Maddyj (New Zealand Label), Bend (Roadrunner/Island) and Adom (Storm).

Would you rather be a singer or a marketing specialist?
I want to do it all.

First concert attended
Styx at the Savannah Civic Center in 1983. Mr. Roboto. Domo arigato. Thank you very mucho.

First concert worked
Local band showcase at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta in 1991. Lost money--my own money.

>First industry job
Brusco Barr Presents--assistant to Wallace Barr in1991. I worked on everything from closed-circuit boxing events to booking Widespread Panic for a school in Tallahassee.

Career highlights
First Jagermeister Music Tour with Drowning Pool and taking my parents to see Paul Simon and letting them watch from the stage.

Career disappointments
Got into the business after all the fun stopped; Not running the company... yet.

Greatest challenge
Convincing artists that having product partnerships is not always selling out.

Best business decision
Moving into sponsorship.

Best advice you received
"No bad bands, just bad deals"--Jack Boyle; "Family is the most important thing"--Wilson Howard

Best advice to offer
See above.

Most memorable industry experiences
My first trip to Los Angeles happened during the OJ Bronco chase. It definitely affected my initial impression of L.A.; My first trip to CIC; My first trip to SXSW. Listening to James Hetfield talk about frequent flyer points during an Oscar party at the Ritz Carlton in Atlanta.

What friends would be surprised to learn about you
I have built some of my own furniture.

Industry pet peeves
File trading is not an unsolvable problem: Just add a fee to the ISPs for unlimited usage; Clear Channel is not nearly as evil or as powerful as it's made out to be; People who whine instead of taking action.

Office paraphernalia
Powerpuff Girls Guitar.

If I wasn't doing this, I would be...
...refurbishing houses.

Industry mentors
Wilson Howard. Ted Mankin. Both taught me so much and gave me the opportunity to grow.
