Industry Profile: Marc Nathan

— By Bob Grossweiner and Jane Cohen

After 32 years working at major music companies including Warner Bros., Atlantic, RCA, and Universal, Marc Nathan has just launched Flagship Recordings, a full service music company that will release a selected group of recording artists through national and international distribution channels.

Marc's unorthodox start in the music industry began when he got his first music industry job at 16 after Todd Rundgren's manager/roommate Paul Fishkin, an East Coast regional promotion manager for Ampex Records, answered a fan letter he had written. By the time Marc graduated high school; he had already become national promotion director for Bearsville Records and awarded his first gold album.

From July 1971-September 1983, Marc held radio promotion positions at various record labels: Ampex (Todd Rundgren, Lobo), Bearsville (Todd Rundgren, Foghat), Casablanca (Kiss, Donna Summer), Playboy/Beserkley (Greg Kihn, Jonathan Richman, The Rubinoos, Al Wilson, Barbi Benton, Mickey Gilley), Mushroom (Heart, Doucette, Chilliwack), SIRE/WB (Talking Heads, Ramones), RCA (Rick Springfield, Hall and Oates, The Whispers, Shalamar, David Bowie), IRS (The Go-Go's, Wall Of Voodoo) and Modern (Stevie Nicks, Natalie Cole).

In radio promotion, Marc was involved in a myriad of chart-topping hits from platinum selling artists, including Stevie Nicks, Genesis, Bette Midler, INXS, Peter Townshend, Debbie Gibson, Laura Branigan, Phil Collins, Mike & The Mechanics, Ben E. King, Robert Palmer, and many others. Moving to A&R, "I had the unique distinction of signing a diverse group of artists that reached the top 10 in a number of different formats: Kon Kan (dance), King Missile (alternative), Linear (pop) and Terry Tate (R&B)," he recollects.

Next up was an eight-year stint at Atlantic/ATCO Records. For the bulk of his tenure there (October 1983-April 1991), Marc excelled at promotion, serving as ATCO Records' director, pop promotion (October 1983-February 1985), then senior director (February 1985-March 1986). For the next three years, Marc became senior director, pop promotion at Atlantic, then senior director, A&R.

Following his Atlantic/ATCO Records years, Marc dabbled in management, working for Between the Ears, from April 1991 - December 1992. "I secured recording contracts for artists Tolga (Zoo Entertainment), Meryn Cadell (Sire/WB) and Kon Kan (Hypnotic/A&M - Canada), and additionally managed Canadian talent, John James (Attic) and Carole Pope," he notes. Marc was also acknowledged by Sire/WB as having brought Barenaked Ladies to their US label, despite not having management on the band.

From January 1993-June 1995, Marc worked at Alesis Studio Electronics, out of New York as Canadian sales manager, and then was relocated to the home office in Los Angeles to become director of promotion/marketing. He prospered with the success of the ADAT Digital Tape Recorder, Canadian Sales quadrupling over the previous year's numbers and created successful promotion/marketing campaigns centered on chart-topping artists with hit songs recorded with Alesis equipment, writing a majority of the editorial and ad copy for the company product line.

Moving on, Marc spent the next nine years at Universal Music Group (July 1995-February 2004), starting out as senior director, A&R/Research for Universal Records. He then became vice president, A&R of farmclub.com, where he helped pioneer the property, then vice president, A&R/Research at MCA Records. He also served as a representative to NARAS for MCA Records Grammy Submissions Panel (2002-3).

Among his accomplishments, Marc notes he was the first employee for Doug Morris' newly formed Universal Records in 1995; signed the first pop hit for Universal Records - Merril Bainbridge's "Mouth" in 1996; brought Cash Money Records into the Universal Records fold via A&R research in 1997 (Cash Money would go on to have gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums from Juvenile, B.G., The Hot Boys, Lil' Wayne, Cash Money Millionaires, Turk); signed multi-platinum act 3 Doors Down via A&R research in 1999 (The group's debut album sold more than 5 million copies in the U.S. alone); and in 2000, being involved in all facets of the development of the web-site/television show/record label, farmclub.com.

The multi-faceted executive returned to artist management after he left MCA in June 2003 and began working with California acts Tremolo (Bay Area) and Eugene Edwards (Southern California.) When his old friend Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies offered him a chance to distribute his solo album, The Vanity Project, Nathan created Flagship Recordings, secured distribution through Fontana and added both of his management clients to his newly formed label's roster. Brett Dennen, a singer-songwriter from Oakdale, CA rounds out the four artist roster.

A passionate sports enthusiast, who has been a season seat holder for the Los Angeles Kings in the now-on-hiatus National Hockey League, Marc has also been involved in freelance hockey writing and has had articles and in-depth interviews posted on a number of hockey websites. As a baseball fan, Marc still holds an allegiance to the New York Mets and ponders another season of mediocrity. He is an avid collector of sports trading cards and publications, boasts a collection of game-worn hockey jerseys and owns over 25,000 vinyl 45 RPM records.

Why did you start your own label, Flagship Recordings?
When you've worked at major labels for as long as I have --I started in 1971-- and you have always had that creative passion, it's logical that you'd want to have your own situation at some point in time. I never really believed I had the wherewithal to actually take the plunge, but when Steven Page called and asked what I would do with The Vanity Project album if I were him, I said, "I'd consider giving it to Marc Nathan to start a label with." Once he foolishly agreed, I figured I couldn't back out and that was how it started.

What kind of artists are you looking to sign?
I have four acts signed, and all will be releasing their albums between now June and September, so by the end of the year my mailing address should read c/o Local Insane Asylum. I'm not sure I thought this thing through, but for better or for worse, all of these artists had finished records or close to finished. We were looking for some sort of distribution situation and, I was a willing participant in my own insanity.

Seriously, I have The Vanity Project in June; Brett Dennen in July -- a wonderful artist who has been cultivating quite a following with the Non-Comm crowd and performed at Bonnaroo and will be in New York supporting Shelby Lynne in Central Park in mid-July; Tremolo in August--Justin Dillon is essentially Tremolo, with the rest of the band in sort of an interchangeable mode, and this album is like a Maroon 5/Matchboxtwenty/Train type deal very commercial, very radio-reliant; and rounding it out, Eugene Edwards at the beginning of September (Eugene is the second coming of the Squeeze/Nick Lowe/Marshall Crenshaw/early Elvis Costello movement, and we're gonna make it a movement.

What have you learned from your stints with other labels that will help you with Flagship?
Mostly I need to be adaptable to the changing environment. I was brought up in a very radio intensive world, and did pop radio promotion throughout the '70s and '80s. How unbelievable is it that that was 20-30 years ago? I 'm staggered by our ever changing landscape. Of course, what I have learned, but can't put into practical application yet, is that financially, I need some serious cash to hire some people to be as dedicated to the cause as I am. I would love to hire three or four people to take some of the burden off of me. Not in the cards yet, but I urge all Barenaked Ladies fans to grab multiple copies of the Vanity Project CD, which the streets on June 21.

I've a tremendous background in terms of promotion, marketing, creative services and, of course, A&R and A&R research, with a solid background with on-line services, having helped pioneer Universal's "farmclub" property in 2000. Additionally, I've lent support to other on-line concerns within UMG, including pressplay, mp3.com, and GetMusic. I was successful in both development and promotion during the last technological changes in our industry--vinyl, cassette, CD.

What kind of tour support do you offer your artists?
Tough question at this point. Brett is looking for a booking agent, and when the right one comes along and offers a situation that would involve tour support, I would be there. Right now I'm going to pay for his attendance/performance at the AAA Radio Summit in Boulder in August, and that will pay off in spades to have him in front of the programmers that can spread the word on him in a heartbeat. Tremolo isn't actively working on a regular basis, but again, with the right radio picture, I will do all I can do to get him in front of the people who are paying attention to the album. Eugene is someone I will give some tour support to if the situation will get him out of Los Angeles. Not that I want to get rid of him, but it's time for him to develop a following outside his backyard.

How do you feel about free internet downloads?
I'm generally in favor, but I'm cautious about cannibalizing the album and the artist. Word of mouth is essential on new acts, and we're being aggressive with streaming on the Flagship site, on My Space and on the individual artist sites. Brett had a free download on iTunes a while back and, it brought him a lot of attention around the world. I encourage and welcome opportunities to expose my artists!

Why did you get into artist management?
It's all about passion. My first foray into it was after I left Atlantic in 1991, and managed Meryn Cadell. We had a minor modern-rock alterna-hit called "The Sweater," and two albums on Sire. I learned the mathematical equation that 20% x 0 = 0, so I thought I'd given management up for good when I went back to work for Doug Morris at Universal. When I heard a Tremolo song called "Promise Ring," the passion was stirred once again, and I decided to give it another shot.

Tremolo and Eugene Edwards are in the process of signing "new model" (note: "I hate that term") agreements that allow me to be both the manager and the record company as long as I'm not "double dipping" in any area of their careers. Its new territory, but I've a great relationship with the people I work with, and Justin and Eugene are secure in knowing that I'm fiercely loyal to them as artists.

What did you learn as a manager that you can bring to artists on Flagship?
Success takes time. Pace yourself. Slow and steady wins the race. Take advantage of opportunities when presented. Be tenacious. Be willing. Be honest. Be open-minded. Be young. Be foolish. Be happy.

What is your take on the state of radio today?
Radio is not perceived by kids the way it was when I was a child. Kids hear new music through their new video game. Kids hear new music in a car commercial. Kids hear new music through file sharing. New music on the radio? I wish!

I'm someone who believes that radio is still a very important tool in the breaking of hit records. It's getting to the point of mass exposure--the "tipping point" if you will--that's tough to do at radio as it's currently not designed to break new artists. It can happen, but it's costly and not a guarantee by any means.

Is satellite radio the wave of the future?
I like it. I wish I could make a decision on XM vs. Sirius, but I like them both, and consequently, I need to make enough money to order them both. One has baseball, one has hockey -- when there is hockey -- and both play a ton of exciting new music. Sign me up!

Explain farmclub.com?
Farmclub was a precursor to American Idol. Farmclub was a precursor to Yahoo Launch or AOL Music or any number of internet sites that take chances on new music. Farmclub was three things wrapped in a neat little package: a television show, a web site, a record company. All of this could have worked IF. Longer story: buy my book. It will come out after I've huge success with another record company that starts with "F."

First concert attended
Cream/Buddy Miles/Terry Reid--Cream's farewell tour--on November 4, 1968 at Madison Square Garden in NYC.

First concert worked
Todd Rundgren played my high school Forest Hills High School in Forest Hills, NY in May 1972. I was working at Bearsville Records at the time, and Todd did this both as a favor to me--he was paid--and as a warm up gig. WABC added "I Saw The Light" a few weeks before so we got a real celebrity for our school concert!

First industry job
In January 1971 I wrote a fan letter to Todd Rundgren. His roommate at the time, Paul Fishkin, responded, and a short time later I went up to AMPEX Records to thank him. Less than a week later I was a promotion man.

Career highlights
A million of 'em, but hearing "I Saw The Light" on WABC was like that scene in "That Thing You Do" for me. I've worked a zillion hits, but I'm most proud of being the first promo guy to get Kiss established at pop radio. Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby" was my baby. As an A&R man, I signed a bunch of artists who sold a lot of units, but "I Beg Your Pardon" by Kon Kan was was first. "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down was most profitable.

Career disappointment
A few hundred thousand of 'em, but Todd Rundgren's willingness to self-sabotage his "pop" career was tough because I don't believe I ever believed in anybody more than I believed in him, and boy did he become a tough sell at radio. My lone signing at MCA was a band called SouthFM, and they had a single called "Dear Claudia" that I'm sure would have been a hit if the label had its shit together.

Greatest challenge
Having to prove myself all over again as a 50-year-old with 34 years experience in a business model that may or may not be relevant any longer. The old "a hit is a hit is a hit" adage has served me well to this point, and I need to re-evaluate that in today's marketplace.

Best business decision
Some people may not consider this a business decision at all, but I'm clear in my head that it was and is to this day: Apologizing to Doug Morris a couple of years after I foolishly treated him with utter disrespect causing my dismissal from Atlantic Records in 1991. I was subsequently the first employee when Doug was brought into what was then the MCA Music Group to start his "Rising Tide" label that subsequently became Universal Records.

Best advice you received
"Get down on your knees and pray for the willingness..."

Best advice to offer
"Accept the things I cannot change..."

Most memorable industry experience
Seymour Stein recently included my name in his list of "thank you's" during his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Truly humbling.

Favorite team/athlete
I'm a Mets fan, and I'm a Manchester Monarchs minor league hockey fan. My favorite athlete of all time was Tug McGraw because I knew him, I liked him, he liked me, and he always made me laugh.

Why not the Los Angeles Kings?
The Los Angeles Kings have existed only to piss me off for over 30 years. The Mets piss me off far less because they've had seasons of greatness. The Kings just always suck.

Baseball vs. Hockey. Tough call. I know so much about both and have been obsessed with both for so long. Baseball came first for me though in 1963. When hockey expanded from six teams in the mid/late '60s I took a decade off. When I moved to LA, no one cared about hockey, so I was given season tickets by a major record company that got them so they could get better Laker seats. I missed about five games in seven years. That's how I got hooked again. This past year was a breath of fresh air for me. Didn't miss it in the least and flew east to watch a week of minor league hockey and that was fine with me.

What friends would be surprised to learn about you
Nothing surprises my friends.

Industry pet peeve
Inability to distinguish between hit records and hit artists.

Office paraphernalia
Mailing labels, printer, computer, CD burner, blackberry, telephone, cell phone, file cabinet, too much paper, too many emails, and a bunch of sugar-free candy bars.

If I wasn't doing this, I would be...
...selling most of my life's possessions on eBay, I guess. I've 150 hockey jerseys that may be as irrelevant as the sport may become shortly.

Industry mentors
Doug Morris, Paul Fishkin, Todd Rundgren, and Marc Ratner. All brilliant minds that have gotten me through this amazing ride with my sanity in tact.
