Industry Profile: Rusty Harmon

Rusty Harmon is best known for managing Hootie and the Blowfish during their gold/platinum/diamond years--1989-2001; their debut album, Cracked Rear View, has sold over 16 million copies. In 2004, he co-founded MTM Music Management with longtime business associate Mark Zenow, in Raleigh, N.C., and recently opened an office in Nashville, where he plans to permanently relocate the entire operation. MTM (Murphy to Manteo, Inc) currently manages Reckless Kelly from Austin, Texas, GB Leighton from Minneapolis and Yo' Mama's Big Fat Booty Band from North Carolina.

"After co-founding MTM in 2004, it was always a goal to open an additional branch in Nashville to focus on the music emerging from this community," says Rusty. "We are very excited about our roster and hope to expand within the country music genre."

According to Rusty, it's all about the music. People are surprised when they hear him say it, because he looks like an NBA small forward, six foot eight with that athlete's slouch, a reminder of the athletic career he flirted with at North Carolina State as a swimmer, not a hoopster. But for Rusty it has always been about the music.

Rusty got his start directly following college with Hootie & The Blowfish and later led them to achieve such accolades as more than 25 million records sold worldwide, three number one albums, two Grammy Awards, MTV, Billboard and World Music Awards and Pollstar Artist of the Year. Rusty has acquired endorsement deals with Budweiser, Nike, Adidas, Southern Comfort, BMW, Taylor Guitars, DW Drums, Hohner guitars and accessories and Gibson for his clients. From 1997-2000 he was president of Atlantic Records imprint label Breaking Records. Jump Little Children was the label's biggest selling act.

From 2001-2004, "I watched my little girls grow up," informs Rusty. "My youngest had just been born when I resigned from Hootie, and my oldest was 1 1/2. I moved from Columbia, S.C. back home to Raleigh. I'd spent so much time on the road with the band for the previous several years. I was tired, and I wanted to just be a dad and husband. I'm very fortunate that I was able to be with my children during the developmental period of their childhood. I'd actually contemplated retiring, but I like this profession too much. There's something magical about discovering a new artist and watching their career take off and the knowledge that our hard work and dedication is a large part of their success."

MTM signed client Jason Michael Carroll to management in the summer 2004, to Arista Records and BMG publishing in 2005 and set up the release of his country topping debut album, "Waitin' In the Country," released this past February. The MTM Marketing division, in partnership with Procter & Gamble, has produced the National Restaurant Association event "One Night Only" for the past three years at Park West in Chicago, featuring Hootie and the Blowfish (2005), The Black Crowes (2006), and Jackson Browne (2007). MTM has also worked with NASCAR related theme parks in Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Toronto and St. Louis.

In 2005, it also signed New Orleans' Cowboy Mouth and Minnesota's GB Leighton and Asheville, N.C.'s Yo' Mama's Big Fat Booty Band in 2006; in 2007, MTM signed Austin, Texas' Reckless Kelly.

Whether its rock 'n' roll, rhythm and blues, country - you name it - Rusty's bands have done it. From the global phenomenon Hootie and the Blowfish to the exciting new groups you haven't heard of yet, Rusty is passionate about bringing his bands' music to audiences.

The rest of the time it is about the sweet sound of getting business taken care of in a way that leaves everybody humming. Rusty knows that a marketing firm is only happy when the client is happy, and Rusty has made a career out of making the big dogs happy. Nike, Budweiser, ESPN, Disney -- that's a real short list of the dozens of heavy hitters who have learned to sing along with Rusty.

A fun loving, savvy guy who is equally at home in a Fortune 500 boardroom, chatting with David Letterman on Late Night, or howling for the Wolfpack in a campus sports bar, Rusty just loves making it work, whether it is marketing, music, or more.


Experience & Advice
One artist wanted me to fire his booking agent because, in his own words, "I've a record deal. I should be earning $5,000/night instead of $500." I tried to explain that would not happen until his single was on the radio, not just because he had a deal. I refused to fire the agent, and the artist fired me. Sometimes, if you want to keep the artist, you have to fire the agent.

What makes a good manager?
A question that could be answered differently every day, priorities shift constantly for artists, from recording to touring to writing to art work to photo shoots to business affairs to radio, etc. The best managers are the ones that give their artist the best advice on each of these topics, but there are times a manager also has to help artists cope with everyday living issues as well, such as relationships with band members, boyfriend/girlfriend, spouses, personal finances, illness, etc. The best managers also are able to juggle relationships with the record label, the booking agencies, radio stations, publicists, lawyers, etc. I've always considered myself the head coach my artist's team.

Ultimately, management comes down to two things, advice and counsel.

Who else if anyone did you manage during the Hootie years?
Our structure was set up differently than most band/manager relationships. I was actually an equal shareholder of all of our business entities -- touring, merchandise, record royalties, and publishing. So instead of earning 15% of gross, I earned 20% of net. Because all expenses were covered by our company I didn't think it would be fair to manage other acts during my run as president of all of the separate businesses. Technically, I would've made all of the profit while the band shared in all of the expenses. Not fair. Also, managing Hootie was always a 24/7 job for me. I'm not sure I could've handled the extra responsibility at that time. I started managing them when I was 25.

In what capacity do you work with NASCAR?
When we first started our company, we were focused on sponsorship acquisition. I was tapping into my past relationships from the Hootie years and met with Burroughs and Chapin in Myrtle Beach, S.C., who own most of the tourist attractions in Myrtle Beach. One of their parks is NASCAR Speed Park. It's a great facility that has several tracks for kids and adults of all ages. They were looking for a sponsorship that would reach all of their locations -- Myrtle Beach, Charlotte, Sevierville, Tenn., Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Toronto. What was unique about this opportunity was that we were only able to approach sponsors that were approved by NASCAR. We ended doing a deal with NAPA, The Auto Parts store that lasted three years.

What is behind National Restaurant Associations "One Night Only" events?
Mark Zenow, my business partner, really deserves all the credit for the NRA events. We've a business acquaintance that works with Proctor and Gamble. He had an idea about entertaining the VIPs that attend the yearly event in Chicago. We'd done some work earlier with the Hootie golf tournament, the Monday after the Masters. They approached us and asked if we could book Hootie for the inaugural event. I made a call to their booking agent, and a few weeks later the show was booked. We secured the venue -- Park West in Chicago -- handled all aspects of invitations, check-in, credentials, band hospitality, settlement, specialty drinks, sponsors, etc. Mark did a fantastic job, and we continue to book the event to this day. Two years ago we booked The Black Crowes, and last year we had Jackson Browne. It has grown in attendance, budget and importance since its inception.

What was it like working with Hootie again in 2005?
Interesting. I'd stayed in touch with them over the years. Jim Sonefeld, Hootie's drummer, was a guest speaker at a class I teach at North Carolina State on the music industry. Mark Bryan, Hootie's guitarist, and I talk about once every three or four months. We're still friends, just not business partners anymore, but when I saw all of the people running the show that I'd hired years ago, it was a little surreal. They did a great job.

How did you initially hook up with Hootie?
I was a student at North Carolina State and an intern for Dick Hodgin, who produced demos for bands and was also a manager of a couple of regional touring bands. Hootie came to Raleigh for Dick to produce their first demo. My job while they were in town was to keep them entertained. That was easy. We played basketball and frisbee golf every day and got drunk every night. I'd been helping Dick for about a year and half and had learned a lot from him about managing a grass roots band from the ground up. Dick did everything for his bands: booking, marketing, sending fliers to clubs, mailing calendars -- prior to the Internet -- getting directions to clubs, van maintenance, shopping for record deals, everything. I learned from him.

When that demo came out the band asked me to be their manager. I said yes, managed them from my bedroom in Raleigh until I graduated from North Carolina State, then moved to Columbia to live with them. It was one step at a time. We were great for each other because we all learned the business together. They were very interested and helpful with all areas of their business. We had weekly meetings about gigs, finances, publicity, marketing, legal matters, etc. I booked the band for the first three years I was their manager. I started with them in 1990, and we got our deal with Atlantic in 1994. I was with the band until the spring of 2001. We mutually agreed that it was time to move on. The band had grown frustrated with their label and booking agency, and I didn't agree with their reasoning. I really wanted to move back to Raleigh so we agreed to disagree, and I resigned. There was no flaming argument. I got up from my office, hugged all of them, loaded up my truck and moved to Raleigh. I'm truly proud of everything we accomplished -- two Grammys, several other awards including the diamond award from the RIAA, more than 25 million records sold worldwide. We got to travel the world several times, met great people and made some money. It was a great experience.

What is the meaning of Murphy to Manteo, Inc?
I'd lived in South Carolina for so long, and when we started MTM, I wanted a name that was indigenous to the state of North Carolina. Murphy to Manteo is an expression that a lot of local people use here in North Carolina. Murphy is the farthest point west in the mountains of NC, and Manteo is farthest point east -- highway 64 connects the two towns. As managers, Mark and I've always considered ourselves sort of like Highway 64, we do everything from point A to Z and all things in between. But, as you can imagine, a lot of people get confused or just don't get it so it has evolved to MTM Music Management. I tell all my Nashville friends that I'm going to have to change the name to Murphreesboro to Manteo. Or maybe Malibu to Manteo. Maybe I'll do an Internet promotion to figure it out.

What does the marketing division do?
Our marketing focuses on the power of music to market a brand, company or event. Our strength is our ability to work with musicians and their music. Lots of companies want to partner either with a band or a song. We're a third party that makes that connection smooth for both parties. We can speak the language needed for corporate entities, but we also speak the language of musicians. It's amazing how many potential relationships have gone bad because a CEO or CFO has said or done something inappropriate with a musician. Our marketing background is pretty obvious. We have worked with such corporate partners as Budweiser, Southern Comfort, BMW, Cadillac, Nike, adidas, Calloway, Pizza Hut, Proctor and Gamble, and others. Our work with these companies has always involved marketing either an artist, a tour, or an event.

The Nashville move came about naturally and organically but also out of necessity. When I first started bringing Jason Michael Carroll to town, we focused on working with industry folks that were already friends of mine -- Radney Foster, Brian Hill of Monterey Peninsula, Kos Weaver, Gary Overton, and others. These are all people I knew from the Hootie days. Jason got on an extremely fast track and we had a record deal with RCA and a publishing deal with BMG within a year. Before I knew it, I'd purchased a condo in Green Hills and was spending about every other week in Nashville setting up Jason's writing sessions and recordings.

That was about two years ago. Now we have an office on Music Row, and I'm about to move the entire office staff from Raleigh to Nashville. It's a tough decision for me because I'm from North Carolina, and I went to school at North Carolina State. However, I have spent an increasing amount of time away from my family -- wife and two daughters, ages eight and seven -- and way too much time on airplanes. But also, so much happens every time I come to town. Nashville has such a different vibe and feel to how the industry works compared to NY and LA. It's infectious.

Something funny started happening about six months ago. I would land at the Nashville airport, and I had that feeling like I was home. I said, "OK, time to move the family."

What kind of artists do you want to sign?
I've been fortunate to pick up a band like Reckless Kelly. They're similar to another band I work with, GB Leighton, from Minnesota. Both bands have a tremendous work ethic. For the most part I've worked with bands that are road warriors. Hootie and the Blowfish worked harder than any band I've ever been around. You see the same qualities in artists like Kenny Chesney, Dierks Bentley and Jack Ingram: bands and artists that live on the road. I would always like to work with artists like that. A lot of artists today have a sense of entitlement, like they deserve the red carpet simply because they showed up. I will always associate myself with hard working, intelligent artists that aren't afraid to dream for stars but are realistic enough to keep their feet firmly on the ground.

Why have you shifted managing rock clients to country?
I still work with rock acts but because of my love for country music, I've also integrated country acts as well.

How do you feel about the current state of the major records labels?
That's a loaded question. Obviously the majors still have all of the muscle, but it's also obvious that changes are being made daily. The majors that will be here in the future are the ones that will embrace that change and make it work in today's digital society. I truly miss the 70's, when labels would spend at least two or three records developing an artist. Today's system is set up such that an artist has to recoup immediately, or they will be dropped. Today's majors don't have time for development. It's all about the hit song, not the career, but, as I said, they have the muscle. When you are fortunate enough to have that hit son, the majors will make you a star.

What makes a hit song?
If I knew the answer to that, I'd be writing them all of the time. A hit song is a song that, the first time you hear it, you're humming the chorus the second time around. That has always been my barometer.

How do you feel about free downloads off the Internet?
Free downloads should be determined by the artists not the fans. Every artist reaches a point in their career where giving away music hurts them financially. In the beginning of a developing artist's career, it helps to give away your music, and even when you are Madonna it helps It helps an artist like Madonna because it draws attention to her latest release and motivates people to download the rest of her record. Every where in between, it stunts your professional growth. But, again, it's up to each individual artist to make that determination. What I hate is fans that steal music on sites that artists haven't approved. Fans that continually find sites where they can steal music should have their right to listen to that artist revoked for life. I mean that. People don't understand, this is our livelihood. Hey look, Britney Spears is going to make her millions from touring and merchandise and other areas. But the guy that wrote her hit song, sitting at home with a family of three to support, working 9-5, trying to pitch songs for a living, he's the one who is getting screwed. If the money doesn't go through the proper channels, the proper people don't get paid.

Do MySpace and YouTube help your artists?
To a degree. I'm not sure that people are watching and running out to record stores or Itunes, but it definitely helps create awareness and provides a new outlet for low budget videos and great moments that are caught on film. I'm still a sucker for a great video on a great video channel.

Career highlights
It all starts with my time with Hootie and the Blowfish. I was their manager for 12 years, and we accomplished so much: 25 million records sold worldwide -- three albums, two Grammy's, MTV Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, World Music Awards. We were the highest grossing band of 1996. I got the opportunity to travel the world several times and meet the best promoters in the business. I was able to see the country's best venues, including Red Rocks, Universal Amphitheater, etc., was able to work with some of the best minds in the music industry, like Ahmet Ertgen, Danny Goldberg, Val Azolli, Joe Galante and others. I've taken two debut artists to #1 albums in their respective genres: Hootie & The Blowfish in the rock and Jason Michael Carroll in the country.

Now, I've opened a management office in Nashville on Music Row, and after all that I've been through, that feels like my greatest accomplishment. It's obvious to me that everything happens for a reason. I feel as if all of this past success has happened so that I can be here today. I'm so anxious to become part of the Nashville community and start a new list of accomplishments.

Career disappointment
I've learned that this industry has its peaks and valleys. It has been disappointing to work with artists that don't quite understand the art of management. Our job is so encompassing: as a manger I become very personal with my artists, even to the point of helping with their personal relationships and families. It's hard to always be judged simply based on record sales or gross touring income, but I've grown to understand why artists think that way.

However, the biggest disappointment I've experienced is seeing the average fan steal from artists by downloading their music from the Internet without permission. I teach a class at NC State on the music industry, and I ask my students every semester if they download music from illegal sites. Every year the number of students that say yes increases alarmingly. I actually have some students now that told me they've never paid for music in their life. Kids that grow up with computers in their kitchens don't understand how much they've affected the industry by not financially supporting their favorite artists. I try to educate students on publishing and explain to them that when they steal from artists, the songwriters don't get paid. After they hear my lecture, they sit there with a dumfounded look on their face. The lack of CD sales has lead so many labels to drop artists that should be career artists. People don't realize that music is art and, art should not be stolen.

Greatest challenge
Being the father of two girls -- eight and six. The music business is easy compared to that.

Best business decision
Not working for WPTF sports production team - -running the parabolic microphone -- and instead, going to the lake for the weekend with the Hootie boys in 1990.

Best advice you received
When an artist fires you, remember: "You'll be in this business a lot longer than they will." -- Doc McGhee.

Did that artist ever make it big?
It has yet to be determined. Not yet, but the booking agent went on to become the Pollstar Booking Agent of the Year.

Most memorable industry experiences
I've a few but these are my favorites: The first time I heard Hootie on a Casey Kasem countdown I cried. I was always such a fan of his show growing up I never stopped to think what it would be like when I heard one of my artists on his show. I was traveling with my girlfriend, now my wife, in Orangeburg, S.C., on the way home from the beach and heard the show. Hootie debuted at number 37 that week. I broke down in tears and had to pull over.

When Hootie won their two Grammy's in 1996: Best New Artist and Song of the Year. What else can I say? It's our Super Bowl.

Finally, taking Jason Michael Carroll from an unknown construction worker in Wake Forest, N.C. and obtaining a record deal with Arista, a publishing deal with BMG, a booking agent--Monterey Peninsula Artists, and a producer with Don Gehman, and, eventually having his record debut #1 on the country charts. Talk about memorable!

What friends would be surprised to learn about you
That I can play the guitar. I just started a couple of years ago, but I'm very proud of how far I've come.

Industry pet peeve
Labels not sticking with an artist longer. There's a reason they call it "development."
