Industry Profile: Billy Atwell

Billy Atwell is a producer, musician, composer and visionary. He also owns AMP Studios in Hoboken, NJ.

Recent projects include Joe Condiracci, who was one of the last artists with whom legendary producer Tom Dowd worked with; Tree, the vocalist from the NY based rock band The Outside; in.times.of.silence’s “Rain” EP; and Scoop Slone’s “Sunday Sunday” EP. Billy also is actively seeking backers/partners to start a label specializing in releasing “EP-only” CDs of his five-song singer/songwriter collaborations.

"Even though most of these upstarts shun the guidance and influence of a seasoned vet of the road, studio and music biz to give them focus, the price tag can be an issue a lot of the time and some tasty tips on arrangements and orchestration--let alone how to get it to sound huge--guys like John Hammond, Ahmet Ertigun, Quincy Jones, and Arif Mardin didn't get where they got by being bumps on a log," says Billy. "And while I don’t claim to be the stuff of legend just yet, I'm more than certain producers in the vast middle ground with my experiences, education and general X factor will make a great bridge between the multi-platinum personas and a passionate D.I.Y. hipster who chooses to slap plug in presets on their digital recordings with questionable results.”

Billy began working with undiscovered talent and became a mentor and consultant to many, drawing on his experiences and expertise. Constantly on the lookout for, and approached by, exciting new musical genius, he longed for a way to help them in their search to achieve their dreams. Now, with the formation of his own AMP Studios, he has created a niche recording studio specializing in the development of singer- songwriters. Combining all his knowledge and capabilities, he looks to develop young artists’ innate talents and move them along the road to success by giving them the benefit of his hard earned know-how and kicking it up several notches from recording at home in their bedroom to a real in-studio experience.

Although mostly recognized as an explosive and dynamic drummer, Billy actually started his musical career in eighth grade, delving into aspects of composition and guitar with various punk bands. Later as a junior in high school, he would sneak into college bars to hook up with similar groups composed of English, business and law majors.

Along the road he blasted away in various rock outfits (th' Inbred/Rhythm Pigs), composed for student films and freelanced his drum skills. He has performed nearly every genre of music including country in desperate Southwestern honkytonks, rhythm and blues in East Coast roadhouses and dance-hall reggae and cocktail jazz in Rhode Island colleges and yacht clubs.

Billy has also explored musical venues for the stage from Shakespeare to New York revivals of the musicals Hair (1998) and Godspell (2000) with significant side trips into the eclectic and avant-garde. He accompanied poet/performance artist Jose Torres Tama and produced a CD of his spoken word pieces. Currently, he is seeking to expand his presence into the venue of "filmic sound-scapes.” These mediums include art installations, more feature length and short films, television, video game scores and various projects as inventive as Saffron, a 2004 collaboration performed at Lincoln Center in association with the Juilliard School. Other participating composers included Phillip Glass, The Kronos Quartet, KODO and John Zorn.

To enhance his scoring efforts, Billy has studied Music for Film and Video at New York University with Bob Garardi and continues to study orchestration and arrangement with Juilliard School of Music graduate Edgar David Grana. The result was award-winning efforts in the 2004 Redgate Productions documentary film “Secrets of Redgate” and a Jersey City Museum stage production of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic “The Scarlet Letter.” He has also studied frame drums with virtuoso Glen Velez and drum set with the enigmatic Billy Ward.

While continuing to work on scores, Billy opened AMP Studios. When asked why he is the right person to lead these rookies in producing their CDs, he says, “whether some of these musicians want to admit it or not, there/s something to be said for sonics and song craft. Musicians can get too clever for their own good . This perspective coming from someone who performed with too many that were. My choice to shed the band objective and go on as a full time producer couldn't be more timely.”


Experience & Advice
Oh man! Going to an audition for Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs dressed like Jeff Ament on the cover of Pearl Jam’s Ten was a great move. I fit in great -- just like a turd in a punchbowl!

Three years later when I went to L.A. to audition for White Zombie, it became obvious the opportunity was so not about me long after the fact. I had them fussing with taking the trigger off of the snare drum so I could try out this great idea I had to add some cross-stick, backbeat crap. Momentum died, and I killed it. I was so pre-occupied with my head trip that I wasn’t reading the dynamics of what was going on at hand, i.e. shut up and rock! Looking back I have to laugh. I’ve been my worst enemy way too many times.

The reality is no one wants you to be precious about anything. Gear, ideas or even your opinion in many cases are irrelevant. If you’re part of a band going through your growing pains in public, then no rules apply. Screw, drink, crash and burn to your heart’s, your management's and bank account's content. When the ride is over and you don't want to pump gas for a living, consider this: professionally, the best players and the most employable ones are those that can adapt to adverse conditions without a lot of drama. What is that old saying? "If you can't do it in a burlap sack under a white light bulb, why bother?" People just want you to show up with your instrument, blaze or downsize your technique to accommodate the room especially in a paying situation, thank them and go home. Conversely try then to carve out a niche for your ideas on your terms and leave the ego when you go to work.

I was on a gig recently playing percussion opposite this upstart drummer who was wailing like Billy Cobham…in a 20' x 20' room! Here he was hired to replace or groove along to some hip hop loops and all he keeps talking about was Tony Williams and playing 32nd notes around the kit while everyone else was trying to sound check stuff, tune up or rehearse. He was playing so aggressively to the point of not hearing the sequenced click in his monitor, none of us hearing the vocals and neither of us percussionists--tablas, doumbek and dohlak--hearing a note we played. The drummer kept asking the sound man to "turn it up, turn it up..." How about backing off and checking the climate, pal? I chuckled. That was me not too long ago so I just did my best to get through it, didn't complain, did my job, thanked everyone and went home. Everyone goes through this stuff.

What prompted you to open AMP Audio?
I realized that even though I didn't like the joined-at-the-hip mentality of being in an original band, I still enjoyed creating and hanging out with talented people who I find cool, cool being the operative word. My ideas flow fast and furious, and by negotiating with fewer cooks I can get down to business and hit the mark more readily with my clients' trust and approval rather than negotiating, compromising and trying to let someone feel included just 'cuz they're paying rent on the jam room. It should always be about the work. When I'm working, I'm in the mindset DeNiro had with his hand over the stove in "Taxi Driver." There's no time for bullshit. Yes, let's have fun, but what are you really trying to say or accomplish? That's why working with bands, and the current music scene in general doesn't much interest me. By working on my own with credible songwriters, I can supply the tracks that someone who doesn't have a band--or a budget for one--needs, and be engaged at a level where I'm constantly raising the bar on myself. Not once have I felt like I was repeating myself with my clients. Sure, certain distinct instruments maybe used on various projects, like tablas, electric sitar, for example, but I'm never just re-writing a raga that was part of someone else's project a month or two back.

What with the business model of the recording industry and the record business itself in flux, my niche was as obvious as the goatee on my chin. My talents were complex, and my overhead was low. The dream is basically to earn a living playing music, no? I'm doing that. I'm sleeping in my own bed. I get to watch my daughter grow up. My clients and I drink Magic Hat, cackle with delight at the happy accidents along the way and turn out some pretty compelling stuff. Of course, I don't have to play songs anymore that modulate from E major to Bb minor just because someone thought it sounded cool--cool being a relative word.

How do you decide who you will work with?
So far I'm lucky enough to have been sought out or sold myself to people who had some intangible electricity in what they were doing. I'm not looking for someone to cash in with. I don't study the market and go look for the next version of what's popular to chase down and sell to the industry before their sound's 15 minutes are up. I like to work with people who have songs in any genre that stand up. Better yet, if while passively listening to a performance the muse presents itself and the arrangement/orchestration falls like an avalanche in my head, all the better. I kid you not, this has happened each and every time. I don't like to listen to things that the artist says inspired them to write whatever it is because it's better to present things in it's raw form. You, your axe and your voice. I don't want to hear what the band you hired at your last gig did with it or what that other producer may have done. Here and now all the way, baby.

Fortunately I've never utilized a cookie-cutter business model or worked with someone who wanted to utilize my services to render a product I couldn't listen to or wouldn't want to play for my friends. Then, of course, yes, this is a business so the money is important, too. By being in a fat and happy cover band, Big Band Baby that plays most weekends, I can work sliding scale when I need to keep the lights on, the good times flowing and, of course, the Magic Hat on tap. I feel very lucky and fortunate these days. Our band is represented by 107 Productions in Old Bridge, N.J.

How do you divide your time between AMP and your other projects?
My cover band plays every weekend all up and down the East Coast from Maryland to Vermont in bars, entertainment complexes, ski lodges, etc. I'm playing to the biggest crowds I have to date and am certainly making way more money than I was trying to express myself and pay to play at CBGB's. Ultimately it allows me to focus on the bigger picture of establishing myself as a composer/producer and keep my drum game on at the same time. The console is my new instrument. I may have never played Shea Stadium, but I'm on to the sort of studio life the Beatles favored after that fateful performance. I'm pleasantly surprised by what I can divide my time with, filling in the gaps. That's why I say I specialize in non-silence. Let's get the sound in the computer and see where it goes from there.

What's your interest in starting a label specializing in releasing "e.p. only" CDs?
A few years back my friend and client Tree, brought me an EP of her band The Outside (www.the-outside.com). There were five songs on it. I couldn't stop listening to it. There was something about the undeniable leave-them-wanting-more logic that was consciously or unconsciously presented on this disc. And if you think about it, most bands have burned out on half their material by the time they get into the studio anyway. Why not release more frequent and current compositions rather than play the life out of them until you can afford to go record them? Working with a short term goal of an EP vs. a full length encourages the sort of focus needed to get the most out of the collaboration instead of it dragging on for months and months. Things can be more spontaneous and less thought out. We work quickly and in the moment developing the songs before the chemistry has gotten tired. You're also more likely to pick the best out of 10 songs shooting for five really good ones rather than saying: "Oh heavens. We're going to need to charge $17.99 for this so we'd better max out the format in an era when people have a nanosecond of an attention span anyway."

I was talking about this with Glen Morrow at Bar None Records, and he waxed that it was a lot like leaving the arm up on the turntable to listen to that one good side of the vinyl over and over again back when turntables were designed to do that. My preference is five tracks as per Tree's outing.

There's also a cost factor. With less content and more minimal packaging you might actually be able to sell some hard copies at a rate people will actually pay for. Kind of a Dischord Records mindset --"$5 postage paid from Dischord;. 5 songs, $5, everyone gets a little P.R. and profile to keep moving. I'd be happy with a digital label, too. All downloads. Stellar. It's not like the CD itself is how artists are making their money these days. It's a means of promotion. Why do you think some artists are just giving it away? Fine but pay me to help you record this free promotional item, okay? And give me a little back end when it winds up in that indie film that everyone raves about at Sundance.

All in all, what's better? A fine glass of red or a case of Schaffer's. They both serve their purpose, but I'm not much of a fall down drunk kind of guy. Too much shit going on in the world to party like a rockstar all the time.

First concert attended
The Carpenters opening for Isaac Hayes, 1972, West Virginia University Coliseum, Morgantown, W.Va., 1972--age six. No lie. It's all been a creative duality with me since.

First concert worked
I’m pretty sure my high school punk band got $50 to go play at a local bar and do Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Dead Kennedys covers. Might have been 80 people there including many classmates who snuck in.

First industry job
Cover bands I played in and working in retail sales at El Paso’s legendary Danny’s Music Box store, The Pro Shop Of The Southwest.

Career highlights
Way too many to mention but...jamming with Allen Ginsberg in '91 at CBGB's; auditioning for White Zombie in '94; playing punk rock above the Arctic Circle in Tromso, Norway in '91 with False Prophets; the first European Rhythm Pigs tour in ‘87; Jim Rado asking me to drum for the 30th Anniversary production of "Hair" in '98, having a composition of mine showcased at Lincoln Center as part of a Juillard Dance Program thesis in '04; opening for the Dead Kennedys in '87; and releasing my new double CD "Dos" this year.

Career disappointments
The time and money wasted trying to work democratically in too many bands to mention; not getting the actual White Zombie gig when all was said and done; and not spending my own money on a plane ticket to go audition for Soundgarden as their bass player in '89. All let downs/disappointments have a silver lining if you use them correctly. I've used mine and try to work smarter, not harder these days.

Greatest challenge
Figuring out how to get around my own psychological baggage to be someone that people can utilize professionally. All the chops and talent in the world will get you nowhere if you're a whiny or hyper pain in the ass. Practice hard on your axe and your personality, be prepared and above all thank everyone…often. Marketing and promotion has been a bigger challenge than learning half the instruments I play.

Best business decision
Cutting out all original band activity to focus on my own potential, circa '03, and then quitting my day job to remain open to full time creative work.

Best advice you received
"Do your own thing." Maybe "Skate rad or die!" The written works of Jung, Balthazar Gracian and Yamamoto Tsunetomo. Advice also came by example through years of enduring my public school band programs. "There's no substitute for hard work, discipline and determination." Reading Samurai literature has only reinforced this.

Most memorable industry experience
Still too many to mention. I've been lucky to have some incredibly diverse and interesting experiences. Many have been so eclectic and extreme that they'd read like an Indiana Jones script. Even the bad memories make me laugh now: getting our car, luggage, earnings and passports stolen while touring England in ’87; spending the night with some local hosts in a biohazard trailer park after a country and western gig in New Mexico. Watch some Rob Zombie films, and you'll get a context.

It's been a great 45-degree trajectory for me. Every experience is better than the last, and all of them have allowed me to grow. Most days that's all that matters.

What friends would be surprised to learn about you:
That I have a relationship to "a higher power." I may walk around looking like Ming The Merciless or Anton Levay, but I’m really a puppy. I should clarify that I'm a far cry from a bible thumper or devotee of any certain deity. I try to subscribe to Buddhist logic more than anything--compassion/patience/humility--but have a certain turning point where all bets are off and samurai logic takes over. Ha ha!

Industry pet peeve
Show biz and celebrities. Music that shamelessly caters to the lowest common denominator and subsequently lowers cultural standards. Superego personas getting spoon-fed for what was once considered art, but it's not art, it's entertainment, and people can continue to roll around in that stuff on their side of the street. I try not to pay attention to this nonsense because it hits me like Kryptonite, awards shows being the worst of it.

If I weren’t doing this, I would be...
...not sure. Lining up to be on "The Most Dangerous Catch?" There has never been a back-up plan, and there never will be. Things are really starting to get interesting these days so I’m pretty convinced I’m doing it and not just hoping to. I just may have that bungalow in Santorini sooner than I think. If you can factor Greek real estate into the equation, I could settle on being an olive farmer: wine, sun, the Mediterranean Sea and a smoldering volcano. Perfect.

Industry mentor
I have people that I look up to and respect, but I can't really say they have mentored me as of yet or been pro-active in my development. Influences are countless but mentors are something different. In that sense I should acknowledge my guitar teacher, John Gazsi. My band directors in West Virginia, Edgar Grana for the theory studies. Martin Bisi, Thom Leinbach and Kim Monday for audio engineering pointers. Billy Ward for some choice concepts that turned my potential to work professionally as a drummer into a reality. Beyond that, I'm kinda out here winging it and learning a lot as I go.
