Industry Profile: Mark Sonder

— by Bob Grossweiner & Jane Cohen

Mark Sonder is the chief entertainment officer at Mark Sonder Productions, Inc. As an award winning entertainment agency, it has become the national leader in designing event marketing solutions through headline entertainment and production services for facilities, corporations and associations. He started the company in 1985 in New York City.

When people say he has written the book for this industry as a colloquial expression they do really mean that this guy, Mark, has written the book. Event Entertainment and Production, released in 2004 by Wiley & Sons, has become the bible for the meeting and event industries. The book was also translated into Russian and released in 2006. This has become such a well-used book because of all the experiences and knowledge Mark has picked up in his 30 years since graduation from The Manhattan School of Music, the largest music conservatory in the USA.

Most companies of this type generally just acquire entertainment for their clients or handle the production for these events--Mark Sonder Productions (MSP), handles both. Case in point, MSP was the first entertainment agency to perform at the newest museum in Washington DC, the Newseum, and was subsequently named as its recommended entertainment vendor while being the Official A/V Supplier at The Times Center in New York.

Although Mark works out of the Washington DC/Virginia office, the company has sales and project managers located in New York, Florida and Los Angeles and New Orleans. He was also part owner of a multi-faceted banquet and reception facility, The Waterford at Fair Oaks, hosting four ballrooms in Fairfax County, Va.

Mark has always been a forward thinker and pioneer in his industry. With the changing world of labels and 360 deals around us, he is an advisor to a new US patented company, BoomBacker.com, which will provide a method and a system to determine a market need before any monies are spent to produce and commercialize an artist. This method and system for determining the market demand for an artist comprises: receiving user input to determine which artist to select from a pool of artists; determining the market demand for said selected artist based on users contributing to a fund for said artist; and producing selected artists that attain a predefined level of user contributions.

Mark is the responsible agent for Linwood Peel's Tribute to The Drifters as well as Les Musiques de Broadway. He is also buying/selling many of today's hottest headliners, including Blondie, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Ronnie Milsap, Phil Vassar, Eddie Money, American Idol's Diana DeGarmo, among others for corporate, association and concert work.

His knowledge and experiences have not gone unnoticed by the academic world as Mark is the only person in this country that concurrently instructs Entertainment on the Road; Entertainment Production and Operations Management; Event Entertainment and Production; Event Risk Management; Best Practices in Event Management, Introduction to Event Management, and Starting Growing Managing Your Own Event Management Company at six different colleges/universities: George Mason University, The University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV), The George Washington University, Stratford University, The University of the West Indies (Trinidad) and Northern Virginia Community College.

Mark is also a trustee in the Frank Vagnozzi Music Foundation, which was created to develop and nurture musicians, bands, artists, poets and their venues for live performances to reach the youth of today mainly in the Tampa, Fla. region.

In January 2008 Mark was named Meeting Industry Guru by Successful Meetings and Meeting News Magazines; he was appointed a judge for Event Solutions Magazine Annual Spotlight Awards; he has two on-going columns writing for Tech Guru and Entertainment--two meeting and event industry trades; he is an author, speaker and contributor to eight other books, plus Entertainment on the Road; Entertainment Production and Operations Management; Event Entertainment and Production; Event Risk Management; Best Practices in Event Management, Introduction to Event Management, and Starting Growing Managing Your Own Event Management Company. He is also an author, speaker and contributor to eight other books, plus being a principal subject in a book: "Reality Therapy: The Influence of Rollercoasters, Religion, and Rock 'n Roll} by Jeffrey P. Stoneking in 2007.

Some industry trades that have published his works include: American Entertainment Magazine; Backstage; Campus Event Professionals; Club Management Magazine; Facility Manager; Performance; ShowBusiness News; and Total Production US. He has been interviewed for articles in Facilities; Convention South Magazine; Northern Virginia Daily and Pro Sound News.

Mark remains an active member of many of the professional trade associations. He has had big screen and TV appearances including: Financial News Network; Fox Television; The Nashville Network; and the film "The Money Pit."

This year Mark has been engaged to speak at four meetings/conventions, including Virtual Meeting World, Harrah Hotel College, ISES Idea Lab and Agenda XPO. He was a former keynote speaker for EventPro Forum and was also chosen to be on a panel for a past International Stadium Managers Conference.

Mark received his performance training as a horn player in the recording studios of New York City, recording radio & TV jingles, TV themes, industrial films and an album. He has been on the sound tracks of the NYC Marathon (ABC-TV), "Loving" (ABC soap), American Airlines, Burger King, Chevr olet, Diet Coke, Fruit Rolls, Getty Oil, MasterCard, Mighty Dog Dog Food, National Car Rental, National Geographic, MBC-NFL, Northwest Airlines, TAB< Timex, Toyota and many more. He performed on an album by Marie Osmond and appeared in concert with Tony Bennett, Cher, Lena Horne and the late Peggy Lee, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra, among others.

On Broadway he worked in both the Gypsy and Sugar Babies orchestra. The Nelson Riddle Orchestra (on tour with Linda Ronstadt and Betty Hutton); Radio City Music Hall Orchestra; The National Ballet of Marseille Orchestra (on tour and in New York), and many more.

He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from The Manhattan School of Music in New York and had private studies with the late Carmine Caruso.

Mark has received many honors and awards, including: Readers Choice Award for Best Production Company given by American Entertainment Magazine; Meeting Industry Guru by Successful Meetings and Meeting News Magazines; Best Special Event Planning under $100,000 Super Six Award by Successful Meetings Magazine; Best Entertainment Producer Spotlight Award and Best Entertainment Production and Best Technical Production ESPRIT Awards (finalist) as well as Best Entertainment Producer and Best Technical Producer and the Best Public Events Planner Award (finalists) in the Washington DC Metro Area.

Mark holds record for the most amount (12) of headline entertainment acts produced for a corporate event in New York in October 2005 at the Les Paul Tribute and Celebration put on by Music Player Live (Music Player Magazine) at Roseland Ballroom with The School of Rock, Larry Carlton, Adrian Belew, Jon Brion, Bakithi Kumalo, David Ellefson (co-founder of Megadeath), Robben Ford, Lisa Loeb, Billy Burnette, Doug Wimbish, John Mayer and Les Paul & Larry Carlton.

Mark lives with his wife Roxanne and ferret Blizzard in northern Virginia.

What makes a good event planner?
Knowing the goals and objectives of your client; working within their budget; have the ability to make the client look good; and lastly, getting along with all the stakeholders.

Over the past five years, what is the trend of acts willing to do events?
Huge. Acts have realized that they can charge the same or more for private events than their public/gated ones.

How has the economy and the rising gas rates affected the event industry?
The economy: we've taken definite notice that companies spending $100K for entertainment are now spending $50K and companies spending $50 in the past are now spending $25K, etc.

Fuel costs: we haven't seen any deterioration on either the acts accepting the work nor attendance at the events..yet.

What differentiates Linwood Peel's Tribute to The Drifters from other groups of the same name?
Linwood has united his former group members as Linwood Peel's Tribute to The Drifters to commemorate much of the great material to which is still known, sung and covered world-wide. Not only does the group perform many of the Drifters tunes that they were noted for but abridged potpourri of standard rock songs. Although this Tribute Show has nothing to do with The Drifters or with the Elsbeary Hobbs Drifters, Linwood Peel, was the lead for The Drifters and the Elsbeary Hobbs Drifters since the 1991-1992 season.

What is Les Musiques de Broadway?
A touring group, based in New York City, with its vocalists/dancers not accompanied by tape but by live musicians, and all are veterans of the Broadway stage or pit orchestras. The shows, and there are three different ones, move smoothly through the various segments, tied together with appropriate music and dialogue to create the mood and background for each selection. Clem DeRosa is the arranger and musical director for the revue.

What instrument do you play?
I was trained at the Manhattan School of Music in French horn. I played professionally from 1976 through my retirement in 1993. I worked with the late Nelson Riddle leading his orchestra in the What's New Tour of Linda Ronstadt and also with Betty Hutton. I played in Broadway shows, in the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra, National Ballet of Marseille Orchestra, but most of all recording work which included radio and TV jingles, such as the original and follow-up Diet Coke commercials, American Airlines, Burger King, Chevrolet Northwest Airlines, Timex, Mighty Dog Dogfood, Toyota, MasterCard and many more; TV themes, including NBC-NFL, National Geographic, ABC Soaps, NYC Marathon; industrial films, like all the car companies; movie soundtrack, which I still receive residuals for; and a Marie Osmond album.

I also worked in just about everybody's band that used French horn, including The late Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Allen, Eddie Rabbitt, Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett, Melissa Manchester, David Benoit, Cher, Lena Horne, Andy Williams, etc. I was even the solo horn player in Mahler's 5th Symphony--yes that one with the horn obligato--in a performance in Carnegie Hall. Yes, I practiced! Lastly, I was a soloist performing all the Mozart Horn Concerti as well as Strauss's 1st Horn Concerto.

Do you miss performing?
Yes, especially when I hear a great horn lick whether classical or popular.

First concerts attended
1965, The New York Philharmonic performing Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra at Philharmonic Hall, now Avery Fisher Hall, NYC; 1970, The Who at Saratoga, N.Y.

This event was nationally recognized, and an award was bestowed onto me the producer of the show; I concurrently instruct at six different universities/colleges both in and out of the U.S.; writing columns for two industry trade magazines, Association Conventions and Facilities and Convention/South Magazines on an on-going basis; speaking at a plethora of conventions and keynoting at EventPro Forum; being a member of the Nelson Riddle Orchestra (Nelson conducting) for part of the Linda Ronstadt "What's New" tour. Named Meeting Industry Guru by Successful Meetings and Meeting News Magazines, January 2008; and 23 years in business…and counting.

Career disappointments
Not becoming a Broadway orchestra contractor and selling my two bedrooms, two full bathrooms on the Upper East Side of Manhattan too early.

Greatest challenge
Becoming the gate keeper for my clients is an ongoing challenge and trying to be the head of two companies with a handful of offices, while physically only being at one location. The second company was NYC's premier Event and Destination Management Company called ViewPoint International, which I owned for 10 years.

Best business decision
Taking the 4th horse in the 3rd race--a private joke; becoming an investor in BoomBacker. This company, protected by a U.S. Patent, will change the music industry as we've known it for the past 50 years; to become a co-owner of a major banquet facility in Fairfax County, Va.

Best advice you received
From the late Bernie Glow, recording trumpeter galore: When I was doing a lot of studio work in NYC--radio and TV jingles, TV Themes, industrial films -- Bernie took me just outside the studio, put his arm around my shoulder as we both looked through the window and said, "Do you see that empty chair? Do you see that--pointing to another--empty chair? These will be filled within a few seconds of the start of the session. They will not be late. But you must know that the contractor doesn't like that. Doesn't like the additional stress of what if this musician doesn't show and will that musician be warmed up or not." His advice to me: "Always arrive at least 20 minutes early to a recording date. Show your face, and do your arpeggios warm-up so you'll be fully ready to go when the session starts, unperspired, relaxed and chops ready to blow!" This was the best advice I ever received as a musician, and I try to share this concept on the headline entertainers that I hire for my events all over the country.

The other advice I've received that has been with me since was from the first American to win the Rachmaninoff Piano Competition, Seymour Lipkin, who, while conducting an orchestra I was in, put his baton down and said, "Whenever you pick up your instrument—play it well." This struck me very deep. So whenever I accept a job of any sorts, I give it my 100% or I do not accept the gig.

Mistakes you have learned from
Unfortunately there have been many. The biggest one was back in 2003. It was at a Blondie public concert I was producing in Columbus, Ohio. This event and my part in it, was part of the subject in the book "Reality Therapy: The Influence of Rollercoasters, Religion, and Rock 'n Roll" by Jeffrey P. Stoneking. Even with an iron-clad contract the promoter stiffed me. Four years later we finally finished in court. Needless to say, although I'm getting most of the money that was stiffed to me, attorney's costs, court costs and time will never be recouped. So as young Stanley--or is it Kyle?--would say at the end of many a South Park episode, "You know, I've learned something here today." What my office is doing differently now is that even for public dates, we're collecting the money in full two weeks before the show. Not the standard industry practice, but the industry should move into that direction with final settlement that night, if that's the way the deal is structured. This particular event was done on a flat fee.

Another mistake was ethically trusting a major entertainment agency. I was dealing with a client company in Connecticut for an international artist. The company decided to call the agency direct. I already had a signed offer form. However, the agency decided to go ahead anyway with this company. Yes, I received my commission directly from this agency. I've worked with this agency since then, sans problems.

Here's a lesson we can all learn from: again an international entertainer being booked in Massachusetts. They gave me an offer. The offer was accepted by a different major entertainment agency and on sending the contract to my client, they decided to change their mind and not go through with the booking. On getting back to the agency with the bad news I was told by the RA that that's fine, but they're interested in a settlement. I was caught really off guard. My company got an attorney, we spent thousands of dollars of our own money. Of course, we lost the account and lost the case. The lesson is, even when an offer is accepted, the client--whether my office or my client--can reject the contract, as it's considered a counter offer. This should've been told to me by this agent from this agency. They cost me a lot of money, business and negative feelings.

Lastly, supplying the seed money for a new company in Florida, only to have the manager abscond with the money. This is going to court this summer.

Lesson learned. We all make mistakes in our lives and careers. Hopefully the mistakes just cost us money. If that's the case consider yourself lucky. We should always remain with our good health, family, house and other loved ones. Fortunately, my mistakes can be measured in dollars and cents.

Most memorable industry experience
Celebrating after large shows with a big Cuban cigar and good ole American bourbon with my staff at the Cuban Hilton Hotel in Orlando after the, at that time, record setting event with five headliners and working with Frank Sinatra at the Golden Nugget Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey in the late 1980's.

What friends would be surprised to learn about you
I'm an expert white water kayaker as well as a former rated cross-country ski racer and a lover of ferrets. I'm the father of Blizzard the ferret. In addition, I'm a competitive duplicate bridge player as a sectional master.

Industry pet peeve
Riders sent to me from the major agencies that are nothing more than scanned j-pegs.

If I wasn't doing this, I would be...
...living in Chile, skiing and kayaking while conducting the orchestra for a Latino female artist.
