Industry Profile: Michael Wood

— By Jane Cohen and Bob Grossweiner

Michael Wood is the general manager of City Lights Entertainment, a full service music and entertainment company headquartered in Ottawa, Ont. He has become the go-to-guy for American Idol analysis and insider news for various television networks including Fox and CTV (Canada AM) for this year's competition. Michael also has a book out on the industry, You've Got A Friend In The Biz, recounting his trips to Los Angeles and the inner workings of the music industry, and teaches a music business course.

Founded in 2003 as a full service musician management company run by musicians, City Lights Entertainment has since branched out to offer a variety of services, including booking (headed by Rick Smith); management, musician marketing, publicity, B2B, radio promotion (Michael); online distribution, business contract review, production, virtual studio mixing artists who submit digital files, mastering (Peter Gilroy).

Management clients currently include Canadian acts Circuit, Ty Hall & The EZ3, and producer/engineer Peter Gilroy, who is also a partner in the company. Other acts City Lights has worked with include The Scarlet Fever and Dope. On the booking agency side, City Lights has a non-exclusive arrangement with Quarter Life, Amanda Rheume, Eddy and the Stingrays, Shawn Tavenier & Silver Creek, Chris Koster, and Andrei Krylove. The company maintains virtual offices in Los Angeles, New York and Nashville, "as a service to clients so that there was a local number in the three major music cities in the U.S. and of course for business contacts to reach us freely,” Michael explains.

A musician in his own right, Michael was discovered by legendary radio DJ Casey Kasem and signed to record label Top Sail Productions/WEA in Los Angeles. “Casey turned out to be the cousin of a family friend.” Michael says incredulously. After connecting with Kasem, "he asked me to send him my demo and asked when I was coming to Los Angeles. With no plans in sight of going to L.A., I told him I would be there in three weeks. It would not be until my full-length indie record was finished that Casey would introduce me to Top Sail. Casey and I are still in touch to this day and he is still the same, sweet man that I met almost 10 years ago."

Until recently, Michael was a guitarist in Canadian band Circuit, which has performed more than 200 shows a year all over North America, opening for Buckcherry, Everclear, Candlebox, Kansas, Vince Neil and others. Michael though is still signed to Top Sail.

In addition, Michael currently teaches a college course in the new Pre-Music Production program at one of Canada's largest colleges, Algonquin College in Ottawa. The 2007 ground-breaking program saw some of the top guest speakers in the business appearing via conference call and web conferencing, including Liz Sheridan (played Jerry Seinfeld's mother on his hit TV show), Dale Penner (producer, Nickelback), Alan Morisette (father of Alanis Morisette), Ruth McCartney (Paul McCartney's sister) and Susan Henry (executive producer, Montel Williams) to name a few.

“Having people who saw the steps taken directly by family members as their careers took off was huge,” says Michael. “Alanis' father played a significant role in her development. A lot of people don't realize that Alanis was already a hit-pop machine in her and my hometown of Ottawa. Bringing the local success story into my class was huge for motivating my students with the concept that anything is possible. Ruth has a great story as well. Her brother is one of the greatest musicians of our time. She also runs a great company out of L.A. called iFanz, an email marketing service for bands, musicians, authors, athletes and artists that allows you build and manage opt-in lists and create and deliver news and promotions.”

His book, You've Got A Friend In The Biz, which was published in November 2007, is a practical guide to the music industry and "recounts my experiences as a musician,” Michael explains. It features advice from top music industry people, including Casey Kasem, Tom Anderson (founder, MySpace.com), Ted Lange (Red Octane, Guitar Hero video game franchise), Ruth McCartney (www.ifanz.com), Susan Henry, Grammy Award winner Shawn Mullins and many others. Recently, the book climbed to the #1 spot on Amazon for music books and #112 for all books being sold.

Known for his unique ideas when it comes to marketing, Michael has worked deals with Binney-Smith (Crayola Crayons) and Subway restaurants "One of my strongest philosophies when it comes to getting the band in front of people is to try and bring the band to the people as opposed to trying to bring the people to the band," he offers. "This is something that's a lot easier than most people think or realize."

How did you get involved with commenting on American Idol?
I got started with the American Idol Insider gig by marketing my book You've Got A Friend In The Biz. The book came out right around January 2007 when American Idol was starting up. I specifically went after television interviews on Fox since they're the ones that were carrying the #1 show on television. I pitched their morning shows on "breaking into the music business" as a musician/author/music industry/Grammy voter guy, if you will. The funny thing is once you have a book everyone looks at you as an expert. I tied my pitch around breaking into the industry and the show. Fox was all over it based on the numbers of people that try out, and the parents who are curious as to how their child can get ahead.

My first stop was on Fox Milwaukee. While I was there, the anchor/segment editor asked if they could take a photo for weekly phone interviews regarding the show: who was going to stay, who was going to go, and, of course, Simon Cowell. I thought if one morning show wanted to do something like this, perhaps the other affiliates would want to do something similar. Sure enough, Chicago, Memphis, and Columbus, to name a few, picked me up to be their Idol Guy. It was just a matter of calling every affiliate across the United States and trying to catch the decision-makers at the right time. Regarding the national morning show in Canada, that network--CTV--carries American Idol up here. I assume they received word some how that I was doing this in the United States and asked me to join them after David Cook won.

Do you miss performing/touring?
I'm just as happy running the music company full time as I was out playing and touring. I still get to travel a lot due to things like being the American Idol Insider for various Fox affiliates in the United States and for other media outlets all across North America. I still get to work in the creative world producing various artists and guiding them in a management role.

How did the marketing deals with Crayola Crayons and Subway restaurants happen?
When Circuit was recording our debut indie record in 2000, we were having the hardest time coming up with artwork that we liked for the cover. We finally all got so frustrated with the task that we decided to leave it blank. I thought if we are leaving it blank, wouldn't be funny if we had a crayon or something in the clear, see-through spine and let people decide what they wanted to the cover to look like.

So one day I popped open a case and put a pencil crayon in the spine...it fit. A friend helped me write up the business proposal to Binney-Smith explaining how the record was coming out and how different something like this would be. Three weeks later I received a massive box from UPS. Imagine my surprise when inside were 2,000 loose Crayola crayons.

By this point we'd somehow agreed on an album cover, and now I had seemingly 2,000 Crayola crayons that needed to be included. The bass player's girlfriend at the time was an animator for Disney so she made this amazing caricature of us all, which we included inside the CD with an opportunity for fans to color them in. One of the guys in the band worked at a CD store with listening stations so we took all the records to the store, opened them, put the crayon in and then re-shrink wrapped them ourselves.

Regarding Subway, we were looking to cover food costs on tour for five band members--one a vegetarian--and two roadies. I'd reached out to Subway’s head office about sponsoring the tour. They seemed interested at the time but upon a follow-up call a couple weeks later, proved differently. At local Subways in the cities where we were performing at high schools, I asked them if they would be willing to offer free breakfasts or at least $1 breakfasts for high school students who potentially came from lower income families who couldn't afford breakfast or lunch. Subway jumped on fully in every city we went, either feeding the kids or giving the a free voucher or coupon. In return for the exposure we provided the local restaurant, they fed us.

How did you first get involved with major league sports?
I started with the junior hockey team in Ottawa. One of the local stations called and asked if I would be able to perform for the OHL's--Ontario Hockey League--Ottawa 67s. It's where the NHL drafts a ton of their players, sort of a farm league. After we performed and it went over so well, I thought, hmmm well, the NHL team should be doing something like this. That's essentially how I got started. I was given an opportunity and took it to the next level.

What are your music deals with major league sports?
In Canada we had started playing the season opener and all play-off games for the National Hockey League team in town. I thought why not do this for all other major markets. It worked beautifully. Where else in Chicago can you do two stadium dates in one day: one for the White Sox with 35,000+ people and one for the Chicago Fire with 20,000 + people and sell merch. And you can still make it to your club date after announcing on stage to come and hang with the band. We played for the Memphis Redbirds, which had 15,000 people at their Triple AAA baseball game. The best part is these corporations pay guarantees, so if you get your group in you can use it as an anchor date. It gives the band enough money for a week to live. The next step is to tie in with so many teams and get music placed in the next EA Sports video game for that sport.

How did the business seminar programs partnership with libraries come about?
I try to do as much outside-of-the-box marketing as possible. In Canada, over 90% of all English-speaking libraries had purchased multiple copies of my music business book, You've Got A Friend In The 'Biz, which did really well, climbing to the #1 music business book on Amazon, but I wanted more.

While U.S. libraries were purchasing it as well, it wasn't happening as quickly as I would've liked. So I offered the library free music business seminars or webinars, as they're audio and video discussions about the business, over the Internet. No travel. No costs. The idea is that the libraries will attract the youth who will hopefully purchase the book for their collection when they check it out, and furthermore, the media coverage from this program will include information on the book and our company. Hopefully, this will lead to additional sales and furthering the opportunity of providing the actual seminar at no cost. I started reaching out to libraries in the largest markets across North America and was greeted with open arms as a very innovative way of educating teens. The program hasn't launched yet and we're in the process of setting up dates.

First concert attended
My second concert is probably more interesting: August 8, 1992, in Montreal at Olympic Stadium. I was 15 and had my 13-year-old brother in tow for Faith No More, Metallica and Guns N' Roses. That was the night that James Hetfield was burned by the pyro, and Axl Rose walked off stage after 55 minutes inciting another riot. I remember literally running from riot police in downtown Montreal without a clue as to where I was going, trying to make sure I didn't lose my brother in the incensed crowd.

First concert worked
My own. Through all the years of touring with Circuit, I wasn't only the guitar player but at some point the promoter, agent, manager, band psychologist, liaison, stage manager, sound guy, road manager etc.

First industry job
Guitar player with Canadian band, Circuit.

Career highlights
Performing at the Corel Centre, now Scotiabank Place, in my hometown of Ottawa. You have to remember that Canadians are crazy about their hockey. Circuit was asked to perform in the stadium for 18,000+ for a game between the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs that was being shown on the scoreboard live from Toronto. It's always great to be back in front of your hometown crowd on a huge scale. Also meeting and/or working with some of the biggest names in the music business, including Casey Kasem, Slash and others, and being in awe of how down to earth these people actually are and how they took their time with me.

With no real, formal education I was hired to teach the business of music at the college level. This has probably been the most rewarding role I've played in the music industry --educating youth on the business of the industry that I love.

Career disappointments
Surrounding yourself with people for the wrong reasons or even not knowing what to do would be a disappointment. The biggest disappointments were people becoming involved with the project from a management/co-management or agency scenario and never being able to deliver anything. I remember we had a mid-level radio tracker who fudged numbers and claimed that there was play in certain markets when there really wasn't. They hadn't encoded the songs for BDS and Mediabase so searching through that option was not available. I found by calling a station that was reporting to the tracker 46 spins a week to discover they had never heard of the band. Just stuff like that. My philosophy is you don't have to like it or want to work with it, just be honest.

We had management very early on and when you would call them for updates, they were building houses, fixing cars. It was ludicrous. They showed up to the mix session on the label debut, stuck their head in for literally five minutes, said, "Sounds good, now, where's the liquor store around here again?" We all have these kinds of stories and mine are no more disappointing than anyone else's, but I suppose that is why our company's mandate is built on honesty and integrity.

Best business decision
Educating myself on the business of music. There's so much more to know.

Best advice you received
Be the nicest, easy to work with person you can possibly be. In the words of my friend, Casey Kasem: "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars;" and “That people work with people for two reasons: One, they like them, two they trust them,” from my partner and mentor Peter Gilroy They're all the qualities that I try and exemplify in my daily life on a business and personal level.

Mistakes you have learned from
Not wanting to confront the people who surrounded me on the business level early in my career about decisions or lack there of that were being made. I did everything I could not to rock the boat. Now, if something does not seem or feel right, I will let you know. There's always a way of dealing with situations without blowing a gasket.

Other mistakes: leaving things in the hands of those whom I considered capable. I remember we were waiting on our U.S. work visas. On two separate occasions the immigration attorney had reassured all that everything was ok. Both times, I had to get two members of Congress involved, members of the Senate and the U.S. embassy involved as our visas had not yet been processed within 48 hours of the tour starting. Due diligence and persistence landed us our visas within the above mentioned time frame, something that could take between three to four months to obtain.

Most memorable industry experience
Attending the 49th annual Grammy Awards and the performance by the Dixie Chicks there. There was so much hoopla surrounding the band after the comments made towards President Bush. That performance was one of the most moving, chilling experience I'vehad within my life in the music industry.

What friends would be surprised to learn about you
That although I love performing in a hard rock band and do a lot of session work, I'm more of an Elton John-ish, AC, Hot AC listener at home and don't listen to a ton of hard rock.

Industry pet peeve
Arrogance, cockiness and just being flat out rude to people regardless of whether the have experience or not. Whether you're a band that formed yesterday to someone being involved in a million unit/dollar outfit, we're all people.

If I wasn't doing this, I would be...
a marine biologist or part of a water ski team somewhere in sunny Florida.
