Industry Profile: David Fishof

— By Jane Cohen and Bob Grossweiner

For more than 25 years, David Fishof has be en a music industry pioneer and innovator, responsible for producing some of the world's most original, successful and exciting live shows and events, including Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band, British Rock Symphony, American Gladiator Live Tour, The Monkees Reunion Tour and Dirty Dancing: The Concert Tour. As a personal manager, his clients have spanned the sports and music industries and have included Phil Simms, Lou Pinella, The Monkees, Joe Walsh, The Band and others.

David is no longer producing the music tours he is known for, but his innovative wheels have not stopped spinning. Today, all his energy and passion is focused on the phenomenal success of his Rock 'N Roll Fantasy Camps (RRFC), which he created in 1997. He now likens them to having an "extreme makeover" effect on its campers. "They are changing people's lives," he says.

The success of Rock 'N Roll Fantasy Camp has now uprooted the lifelong New Yorker and his family to relocate to Los Angeles where David is in negotiations with a major television producer to turn his Rock 'N Roll Fantasy Camp into a reality show.

"It was hell commuting back and forth from New York to L.A.," says David, who recently underwent back surgery. "I needed to make the move and closed my New York office."

The concept of RRFC is to offer campers of various musical abilities a once-in-a-lifetime experience to learn, rehearse and perform with their rock legend counselors for a grand finale performance on stage.

Past camps have taken place at SIR Studios in Los Angeles, The Hit Factory in New York City, Abbey Road Studios in London, B.B. Kings Blue s Club & Grill in New York City, House of Blues in Los Angeles and Las Vegas and various other famed recording studios and venues.

The camps also come in various configurations: Rock Star On Tour Camp, Destination Camp, Corporate Camp and Corporate Party Camp.

Living out your fantasy does not come cheap. Packages per person run $1,999; $2,499; and $9,999 and are mostly 1-day camps.

RRFC counselors are a who's who of rock legends. Among them: Roger Daltrey (The Who), Jack Bruce (Cream), Slash (Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver), Joe Walsh (Eagles), Max Weinberg (Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band), Bill Wyman (The Rolling Stones), Bruce Kulick (Kiss), Gary Brooker (Procul Harum), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Paul Stanley (Kiss), Mickey Hart (The Grateful Dead), Steve Vai and countless others.

The last camp on the books for 2008 takes place in London, Nov. 4-9, at the famed Abbey Studios where campers will rehearse and record and then get to perform live on stage at one of the world's most famous rock clubs, The Cavern in Liverpool where the Beatles first made their name.

In 2007, David brought RRFC to corporations with two camps. It has now grown to 12 this year. Plans for next year include the expansion into casinos with the expertise of Paradise Artists' Howie Silverman and Jim Lenz. Already on the books is Emerald Queen Casino in Seattle and Northern Lights Theatre, located at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino in Milwaukee.

Prior to his music career, David was a sports agent, representing such NFL greats as Phil Simms, Mark Bavaro, Vince Ferragamo, and Jack Reynolds as well as baseball stars Lou Piniella, Dave Magadan and Randy Myers. David has also authored the best-selling book, "Putting It On The Line: The Power of Negotiating" (William Morrow, 1983), which was about sports and entertainment.

With his cross-country move also came the task of unloading his vast collection of rock and roll memorabilia. To that end, David called upon Backstage Auctions, a boutique online auction house specializing in authentic classic rock memorabilia. David's auction runs Oct. 12-19. The full auction catalog, which features more than 300 lots, is available for viewing online beginning Oct. 5. A portion of the auction proceeds will benefit The Teenage Cancer Trust as well as several other charities that David supports.

Highlights of David's online auction include a Rock-Ola The Beatles Yellow Submarine Jukebox; an original Peter Max "Ringo" painting; a LeRoy Neiman "The Beatles" serigraph, signed drum heads by George Harrison and Ringo Starr; signed guitars including a Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp 10-Year Anniversary by Roger Daltrey, Joe Walsh, Jack Bruce, Vince Neil, Slash and others; Al Hirschfeld signed artwork featuring Ringo Starr, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger; Mickey Mantle signed baseball; and more than 100 signed items by some of rock's greatest legends.

David is currently writing his second book, collaborating with Ed Oakes, founder of Oracle, about how to run a company like a successful rock and roll band. He is also breaking onto the speaker's circuit and plans to sign with an agency. This past August, he delivered the keynote address at the National Speakers Association in New York.

How did the concept for Rock 'N Roll Fantasy Camp come about?
When I was touring with Ringo and His All-Starr Band, people asked me all the time what it was like to be on the road with all those great artists because they saw how amazing it was. So I thought it would be great to give this opportunity to people, but after doing the first camp in 1997 in Florida and losing a lot of money, I decided not to do another camp. Eventually, my phone kept ringing during the next five years and people kept asking me when I was going to do another camp. The next camp I did was not until 2002.

Was it easy to get the rockers you wanted to participate in the camp?
It was easy because I called my friends and associates: Nils Lofgren, Mark Farner, Clarence Clemons, Mike Love, and all the rock stars that I had dealt with in the past on many of my tours. I asked them if they would come, and everybody said yes and thought the idea was great. So based on their response, I decided to do the camp. When Roger Daltrey agreed to do the camp a year later, the camp broke wide open.

What makes a great addition to the Fantasy Camp?
The campers. The counselors and the rock legends that come are the ones who help them live their fantasy and reach their dream. It seems like every camp gets better and better as we learn how to perfect it. For me, to see the life changing experiences and expressions on these campers' faces is what makes it all worth it. The campers' excitement and surprise of the rock stars that come from Keith Emerson, Randy Bachman, Sully Erna from Godsmack and others.

How did you get involved with Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band tours?
In 1988, the Pepsi Corporation approached me and said they would get behind any project I wanted to do. I came up with the idea of Ringo and His All-Starr Band. I wrote him a letter, met him, gave him a presentation of what I had in mind, and Ringo said I was thinking the same thing. A few months later we made a deal. That's how Ringo and the All Starr Band was created.

How did you get started in the management of sports stars?
I was writing for the local Jewish Press in New York in 1975, and I went to interview Elliot Maddox of the New York Yankees because he was planning to convert to Judaism. A month later, at age 21, he hired me to be his agent, in 1976.

Why have you cut back on your live music endeavors to concentrate solely on the Rock 'N Roll Fantasy Camp?
I decided to focus on the Rock 'N Roll Fantasy Camp to build it into a major business for corporations, casinos and other entities.

How is expansion into those areas going?
Great. We did a camp last year for People magazine, and they were blown away. As a thank you, the camp got full page ads in the magazine. The goal is to bring the Rock 'N Roll Fantasy Camp to all corporations. It's a great team building event.

In 2007, we did a camp for two corporations, including People magazine. That has grown to 12 in 2008. Next year, we're going into casinos and already booked in Seattle and Milwaukee.

With American Gladiators back on TV, are you still involved in any aspect of it?
I'm not involved in this round of gladiators, and I don't believe a tour would work for many reasons, which I don't want to get into. I did very well with it back then, but only because I was fortunate to be partners with Kenneth Feld, who knows the family show business better than anyone.

First concert attended
In 1974, the Beach Boys and Chicago at Madison Square Garden.

First concert worked
Summer of 1983, when I took on the management of The Association at the Chicagofest in Chicago. I was a sports agent at the time, repping Vince Ferragamo and Fred Dryer. I got a call from the band out of the blue asking me to rep them.

First industry job
I started booking acts in the Catskill Mountains. Comedians like Freddy Roman, Herschel Bernardi and Henny Youngman and then went on to represent the actor Herschel Bernardi.

Career highlights
There are so many, it's hard to choose just a few; 1986 marked working with The Monkees tour, followed by the Giants winning the Super Bowl and me representing nine members of the Super Bowl team, including MVP Phil Simms, the entire offensive line, Jim Burt, and Phil McKlonkey, followed by the Dirty Dancing Live! Tour with agent Dennis Arfa, followed by Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band, and then Rock 'N Roll Fantasy Camp. Every day is a highlight.

Career disappointments
I have to admit, Mortal Kombat: Live Tour, which I thought should have been a huge success, was my most disappointing venture.

Greatest challenge
Keeping my Jewish orthodox faith in the world of show business and pro sports.

Best business decision
Not to sell my business yet. I've been approached many times; and and to keep my anonymity. Being my own person.

Best advice received
I've been very fortune to have had great mentors in this business since I started out very young. The best advice I ever received was: "When you work for somebody, you'll always make a living. When you work for yourself, you can make money," and "Luck is when preparation meets opportunity."

Best advice to offer
In order to succeed in today's world, you need a college education.

Most memorable industry experience
So many: from winning awards through the industry and being recognized by your peers, including Innovator of the Year in 1986 for The Monkees tour and Tour Package of the Year in 1988 for Dirty Dancing: Live Tour, both from Performance magazine, to the great friendships that I've made. Just seeing thousands and thousands of people showing up to your events of ideas you have created.

Favorite team/athlete
The Boston Red Sox since I spent a lot of my youth in Brockton, Mass. Carl Yastrzemski because he won the triple crown.

Favorite restaurants
I'm so limited because I eat strictly kosher so I would have to say Prime Grill in New York City, where Madonna eats, too.

Favorite hotels
The Four Seasons in Dallas because they have a great health club, golf course and basketball court.

What friends would be surprised to learn about you
That I'm really a very compassionate person and that I care more about the people than I do about money and music. I enjoy personalities and people with talent!

Industry pet peeve
I miss the old days when I could call Jules Belkin, Bill Graham or Ron Delsener and tell them I have an idea for a tour, and they'd say, "OK, Fishof. I'll take a chance. I'll buy four markets of your show." Today, it's not like that. No one is interested in an original idea like The Happy Together tour or The Monkees or American Gladiators or Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. It's all about getting the highest ticket price and biggest name you can get. I miss the creative part of the touring industry.

Office paraphernalia
My computer, laptop and blackberry: I've gotten so used to them.

If I wasn't doing this, I'd be...
..a rabbi like my father was, my brother is, and my son-in-law is. Or I would be a mohel, because I always like everything with 10% off.

Industry mentors
My first mentor was Tom Illius from William Morris Agency, who really gave from his heart, and for him I'll always be grateful. Also Jules Belkin and Ron Delsener, who believed in me when I started putting my package tours together. Many people have believed in me and helped propel me to where I've gotten to today. Working with Ringo Starr was an honor. The lessons of life that he showed are immeasurable, and I will forever be grateful to this incredible human being.
