With a marketing degree from East Texas State University, a dream and a lot of ambition, agent David Neilon learned by trial and error the ins and outs of the entertainment business.
Rising Star Productions was founded in 1978 in Dallas as a one-man agency. "My first introduction to booking came from local clubs and hotels for unknown artists who wanted exposure, David recalls." As the years progressed and the agency became well known, David took the plunge to go national. “I also began to do what we called at the time a buy/sell or middle agent,” he says. “During this time I produced shows with Gary Stewart, Dean Dillon, Johnny Rodriguez, Tanya Tucker, Ty Herndon, Exile and Eddy Raven.” Doing this quite successfully until 1998, he decided it was time to relocate the agency to Atlanta. Rising Star Productions became Rising Star Promotions and with his partner Laney, who later became his wife, they focused on areas that would establish a strong growth pattern. “Our sites were set on a national and international level. We actively began to pursue nationally known and signed artists and have been successful in that endeavor. Several artists on our roster have achieved Billboard certified #1’s as well as CMA and Grammy awards and nominations along with gold and platinum albums. We currently represent a diverse range of artists from Earl Thomas Conley, Perfect Stranger, South 65 and Kevin Sharp to Morris Day & The Time, 1910 Fruitgum Company and new upcoming artists such as Faith Trent, Karen Shayne and Greta Lee to name a few.” The company’s concentration is segmented into four separate and distinct areas: Casinos, Fairs & Festivals, Colleges and “A” Nightclubs. “The additions of three agents -- Lee Oliver, Eric Richman and Karyn Mrozek -- make it possible to have the ability to work these areas as we continue to grow,” he notes. “With over 20 years experience, I am proud to say that I am still around in this ever-changing industry. Nothing is done without a few bumps in the road and I have had a few. That is what makes a person strong. We are as equal and as competitive as the larger agencies and I pride myself in knowing that we will always be an agency known for its honesty and swift replies to our clients. An active industry participant, David is a member of CMA, APCA, IAFE and NACA. First industry job When I founded RSP in 1978. Career highlight Being recognized in Billboard, looking forward to many more career highlights Career disappointment The first celebrity show I ever booked, the venue didn't advertise until the day before the show, the artist came in drunk and high, could barely stand up on the stage and the venue lost money. It was a learning experience. Greatest challenge Dealing with managers and management firms in the area of acquisition of major talent with marquee recognition such as an Alan Jackson or a Britney Spears. Best business decision Bringing my partner Laney into the business and focusing our business on an international level. Worst business decision Booking a show without a deposit and getting stiffed by the buyer and the artist. Best business advice you received Learn everything you can about your business and your competition, decide on your target market(s), create a plan of action and follow through and focus on your chosen plan. Best advice to give Never give up on your dreams, nothing is impossible when you have the desire, determination and persistence to follow through and maintain your focus. Most memorable industry event 1981 CMA awards and post-show party. What people would be surprised to learn about you Prior to starting RSP I was an air traffic controller. What effect, if any, did the Sept. 11 attacks have on your business? There were some shows that were canceled, but they are now in the process of being rescheduled. Business did slow down for about a month but it is now starting to pickup again. Many people feel they have personally changed in the aftermath of the attacks. Have you? I have changed in the respect that each day is now more precious and I try to live each day to the fullest and appreciate the little things more. Our basic freedoms and security have been attacked and that has made me more aware of our security needs in all forms. Office paraphernalia Guitar, pictures of my children Staci and Misti and my soul mate and partner Laney, industry publications, pictures of celebrities on our roster and those we have worked with in the past. Industry pet peeve Talent buyers, promoters, managers and other agents that don't have enough professional courtesy to return a phone call. Also, managers and agents that ignore or do not respond to offers for their artists. David can be reached at 678-445-1712; e-mail: david@risingstarpromotions.com
